Give Thanks for the Hot Toddy - How to Make the Best Toddy Yet

No worries though: as always, I have your back. Here's a cocktail that will take away all of the pain with its deliciousness.

I don't know how "p.c." it is to mention this publicly (sorry parents!), but the hot toddy has been one of my oldest favorite drinks. When I was a kid, I fondly recall my parents making hot toddies essentially every time I was sick - whether they were alcoholic or not is debatable, maybe it just depended on how sick I was. Point is, I can't remember a time where I didn't know what a hot toddy was, so imagine my surprise when in the last few weeks I realized tons of people have spent a huge chunk of their adult life NOT drinking hot toddies when they were sick. Don't worry if that's you, I'm here to save you now! The hot toddy is an amazing drink, sick or not. And it just got (somehow!) more amazing with the twist I'm putting on it to make it your perfect Thanksgiving drink. For the sickies out there, I'm convinced the whiskey has a sterilizing effect that makes everything in your body clear of sickness, but in reality it's probably the honey, tea, spices and lemon combo that really makes it the greatest - the whiskey just helps sleeping.

Directions

First, we're going to create what makes this hot toddy different than every other hot toddy you've ever had: the delicious brown sugar simple syrup. I love a good simple syrup, and I love it even more when it's perfect for my second favorite holiday, Thanksgiving! To make the simple syrup ratio you will use a 1 to 1 ratio. So 3 teaspoons of brown sugar will be matched with 3 teaspoons of water.

Just like with other simple syrups, you will combine the sugar and water and bring it to a boil. Stir as it boils to properly combine the sugar and water. Once the water boils, you should be good. Now that your brown sugar simple syrup is made, it's time for toddies! Make your tea-- you can use any strong tea here; I prefer Earl Grey or English Breakfast. Once you have your tea made, get a giant glass ready!

Pour the whiskey in your glass, then pour in your tea; next you will fill with your slices of oranges and lemons. Then drop in a cinnamon stick or ground cinnamon, some cloves, some honey, and some brown sugar to top it off.

The brown sugar, honey, and whiskey combine to make a sweet, delicious drink that will have you feeling better in no time.
