We should start by addressing that this is not a movie review. This is a thread between thoughts and occupation and an attempt to affirm what we already know.[caption id="attachment_2096" align="aligncenter" width="300"] photo credit: SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK/ The Weinstein Company
Back story, my first job out of college was for Texas Correctional Office on Offenders with Medical or Mental Impairments where a staff of 7 served mental health consumers who were engaged in the Texas Legal system. I wish I could tell you exactly what I did at my job on a daily basis but lets just say this is not the case where “if I tell you, I would have to kill you,” it is more like “if I tell you my clients (previous) will kill me."[caption id="attachment_2092" align="aligncenter" width="202"] An artist's interpretation of an individual diagnosed with schizophrenia[/caption]
On topic, I enjoyed the company of all my clients as each story was of value. I thought how for many who were diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder, Major Depressive Disorder, or Schizophrenia (characterized by delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech/behavior, and negative symptoms) they felt their mental health was tied to happiness, religion, and love.[caption id="attachment_2095" align="aligncenter" width="500"] http://www.tumblr.com/tagged/matthew%20quick[/caption] This brings me to Silver Linings Playbook, starring Bradley Cooper as Patrick and Jennifer Lawrence as Tiffany. To avoid sounding like a review I will spare you the details (GO WATCH THIS MOVIE), know that the relationship between Pat and Tiffany reminded me of many previous clients who like Pat found meaning and happiness through his relationship with Tiffany.
While this relationship is not a cure-all for Patrick, it is a an appropriate distraction and gives him meaning to work on his mental health and to keep ascending or “Excelsior! Excelsior. Excelsior” as Pat says. The film is good, and from a person that has worked with the criminally insane I can attest to its validity. I also think it is good to look at ourselves to see if the relationships we are in, or strive to be in will make us better and achieve "Excelsior!"
