Don't get me wrong: I love a pretty, shiny lip gloss, even when the wind blows my hair in it and -- in my attempt to correct the hair -- drags the sticky mess across my face. Pale shimmery glosses are great for summer and work well with dramatic eye makeup. The ease of gloss (or any nude shades of lip color) makes it a versatile product; you don't have to have a mirror to put it on, you can slather it on in the car and not worry about going out of your natural lip line, etc.

As much as I appreciate the no-fuss ease of lip gloss, I must confess: I sometimes miss the punch of a powerful, colorful lipstick. I have been especially excited (yes, I get excited over lipsticks) about the new matte lip trend, in which the lip color wears more like a stain. So what does this girl do when in search of the perfect matte lipstick? To the internet!

The jackpot I uncovered is a small -- but amazing -- makeup line called Lime Crime. Since 2008 Lime Crime has been pumping out loud, colorful products intended for makeup lovers with a somewhat wild side. LC is definitely cult-inspiring: their website looks like Lisa Frank had a baby with Nicki Minaj, but in the best way. After poking around a bit, I discovered exactly what I'd been looking for. The Velvetines.

According to the site, the Velvetine lip colors are  "long-lasting lipstick that goes on like a gloss and dries matte and velvety, like a rose petal." And how. There are only two colors offered for now (I told you it was a small company!) but I immediately ordered the 'Red Velvet' shade, because who doesn't always need a new red lipstick? Bonus: the Velvetines are completely vegan and cruelty-free. Extra-awesome bonus: they're only $17 bucks.

Needless to say, I'm in love. It's the beauty of a matte lip without any of the feathering, cracking, or running of a normal lip stain. And if you do need to add something glittering, throw some gloss on top for a punchy pout that won't quit.

Get 'em here, luvvies! Put on some lipstick and feel better!
